This is brilliant! Have you read the work of sociologist Michele Lamont? She won the ERAMUS prize and is prof. of Sociology and African and African-American studies at Harvard. Here’s one of her latest articles: From ‘having’ to ‘being’: self‐worth and the current crisis of American society. It describes how using the middle class as the ideal leads to inequality. The middles class is 20% of the population. 100% can’t fit into 20%. There’s a necessity to value all social classes. The American Dream makes the majority feel like failures for not being included in the middle class. Ideas of neoliberalism promote meritocracy, and in my opinion, no one really has access to the American Dream unless you’re a WASP male.
